2018 January youth holiday activities

Pool parties, cooking, art, craft & wood working classes, bubble soccer, hip hop dancing, sword fighting and F1 racing cars are all part of a series of free and low-cost activities within the Snowy Valleys Council January holiday activities.

Council has been working with local artists, businesses and sporting groups to develop a diverse range of activities to keep young adults busy, sociable and active.

The program line-up includes:

Tumbarumba Pool Party

When/Where:: Friday 5th January 12pm-3pm @ Tumbarumba Swimming Pool

Who: All ages, free entry!

Beat the heat and head to the Tumba pool for a party hosted by Tumbarumba swimming pool staff and the Tumbarumba Youth Council. 

New Snowy Valleys Skull Island float will be free of charge and fully supervised by pool staff. Youth Council Sausage sizzle and fruit drink combo for only $2. Games, music and good times for all ages.

Dreamcatcher Craft 

When/Where: Monday 8th January 9am - 11.30am @Tumut Neighbourhood Centre, AND 1pm - 3.30pm @Batlow Library

Who: Ages 11yrs+;  Free event;  Bookings essential

This two and a half hour workshop will teach you all you need to make and take your own dream catcher home.  Hosted by Shannon Hibbens these fun sessions are guaranteed to take any boredom away from your kids in the holidays

Woodworking

When/Where: Wednesday 10th January 10am - 1pm @Adelong Men’s Shed, 39 Lockhart St, Adelong 

Who: Ages 12yrs+; Free event; Bookings essential

Learn how to make a toy wooden car with help from men’s shed volunteer members in a controlled and supervised wood working area. BBQ sausage sizzle included.

Bubble Soccer & Archery Tag

When/Where: Thursday 11th January 10am - 12noon @Tumbarumba Football Ground, AND 5pm -7pm @Adelong Showground

Who: Ages 10yrs+; Free entry; Parental consent required

Pumped Up Parties brings Bubble Soccer and Archery Tag to town.  In Bubble Soccer, just like football the object is to get soccer ball in the goal, only this time while running around in big see-through plastic bubble suit. Watching this play out is almost as much fun as taking part.  Archery Tag is a must for team building games. Each player is shown how to use the special bows to shoot soft ended arrows at the opposing team.

Pizza and Coffee Making

When/Where: Friday 12th January  3pm - 5pm @Kat's Whiskers Cafe, Tumut

Who: Ages 12 to 17yrs; Only $5 per person includes pizza and drink; Bookings essential

Come along and learn the art of pizza & coffee making with Clara at Kat’s Whiskers Café.

Batlow Pool Movie Night

When/Where: Saturday 13th January  Doors open 7.30pm, movie starts at 8.15pm @Batlow Community Pool

Who: All ages, under 12s must be supervised; Only $5 entry per person

Watch Despicable Me 3(PG) on the Movies by Moonlight outdoor inflatable movie screen floating on your li-lo or from your rug on the grassed area.  Sausage sizzle and hot dogs will be available for purchase along with refreshments, all provided by Rotary’s Batlow Interact Group.

Bring your own li-lo or other floating device to watch the movie from, or sit on a rug on the grassed area by the pool. 

Hip Hop Dance Classes

When/Where:

  • Monday 15th January 10am – 11am (Juniors); 11.15am -12.15pm (Seniors) @Tumbarumba RSL Hall, AND 2pm - 3pm (Juniors) @Khancoban Hall
  • Monday 22nd January 10am – 11am (Juniors); 11.15am – 12.15pm (Seniors) @Tumut Boys Club Hall, AND  2pm - 3pm (Juniors) @Adelong Public School 

Who: Ages Juniors 7-11yrs and Seniors 12yrs+; Free entry; Bookings essential

Hip Hop dance instructor, performer and choreographer Centennial Tuvale will deliver even more hip hop dance classes. His high energy sessions teach formative moves that the novice up to the more experienced dancer can appreciate.  These classes are for anyone wanting to try hip hop dancing for the first time or for those who would like to return to revisit classes with Centennial again.

Art Classes- Drawing & Felting

When/Where:

  • Monday 15th January 10am – 12noon Drawing;  1pm – 1.30pm Felting @Tumba Artists on Parade 
  • Tuesday 16th January 10am - 12noon Drawing; 1pm - 1.30pm Felting @Tumut 5 Ways Studio

Who: Ages 7yrs+, Drawing Class $25 per person, Felting Class $35 per person; Bookings essential

Artist and teacher Jess Forster returns to deliver some fantastic drawing and felting workshops.  Why not beat the heat and get inside in the air-con for some art fun.

Fencing/Sword Fighting

When/Where:

  • Tuesday 16th January 10am - 12noon @Tumut Boys Club Hall
  • Thursday 18th January 2pm - 4pm @Tumbarumba RSL Hall

Who: Ages 12yrs+; Only $5 per person; Parental consent required

Come along and experience this fun, fast, safe and unique sport.  Batlow Sword Club’s Sam Hughes is experienced in the world of fencing as a competitor and instructor. In this two hour session participants will get into the safety gear, be shown the basics moves and then let loose to have a go in a controlled and supervised environment. Participants should wear sneakers and shorts or active wear so they can move and keep up.

Up-Cycling Craft Fun

When/Where:

  • Friday 19th January 10am - 3pm @Khancoban Hall

  • Thursday 25th January 10am - 3pm @Tumbarumba Artists on Parade

Who: Ages 11yrs+; Only $5 per person and includes all materials, light snacks and refreshments; BYO lunch; Bookings essential

Hosted by Chris Horsley, participants will UPCYCLE old clothes to give them new life, help prepare costumes to promote RECYCLING, learn new skills, share great ideas and have fun!

IOTA F1 Racing Cars & Track

When/Where:  Thursday 18th January 11am - 2pm @Tumut Boys Club Hall

Who: Ages 6yrs+; Gold Coin Entry

Join IOTA Racing Team to make your own paper racing car and race it on their 20metre purpose built track. There'll be prizes up for grabs and a BBQ sausage sizzle & light refreshments available for purchase. Fresh from their win at the state racing car championships, team IOTA are the first professional class team from the Riverina with these type of F1 racing cars which were all developed by students at Tumut High School.  For more info on their achievements and journey so far visit www.iotaracing.net
