Residents of Snowy Valleys Council can dispose of their accumulated waste at no extra cost over four weekends during this financial year at Adelong, Batlow, Khancoban, Talbingo, Tumbarumba and Tumut Waste and Recycling Centres.

Council’s Director Assets and Infrastructure Matt Christensen said he was pleased to offer a harmonised Waste Weekend calendar across the Snowy Valleys Region.

“Last year we held the traditional four seasonal waste weekends in the Tumut region and trialed two weekends in the Tumbarumba region”, Mr Christensen said.

“We had a good response to the trial so this year we are offering four seasonal Waste Weekends for all our communities to take advantage of.”

The Waste Weekends will be held on the first weekend of each change of season; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Waste Weekends complement Council’s regular waste collection service allowing residents to dispose of a range of household waste that doesn’t fit in the kerbside bins.

The Spring 2018 Waste Weekend will be held this Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September in all locations.

Residents are limited to up to 1 cubic metre of general non-recyclable waste per day.

“A cubic metre is about 4 large wheelie bins, or a standard ute load, standard box trailer load or a standard large mattress, and charges will apply for volumes exceeding 1 cubic metre,” Mr Christensen explained.

Commercial quantities of chemicals, asbestos and truck/tractor tyres will not be accepted over the weekend and there is a minimum of 2 standard car tyres allowed per load.

Mr Christensen said that while the Waste Weekends are a great time to dispose of items like used mattresses, old carpets and white goods many people forget that recycled materials can be dropped off for free all year round.

“These Waste Weekends often see people coming with trailer loads of goods that can be recycled for free at any time. We encourage residents to only bring non-recyclable rubbish over the Waste Weekend to help us avoid long queues and excessive site congestion,” Mr Christensen said.

Cardboard, paper, steel and aluminium can all be disposed of for free at any time at all sites and the Tumbarumba and Tumut Community Recycling Centres also accept E-Waste, Paint, Motor oils, Household batteries, Gas bottles, Other oils, Smoke detectors, Fire extinguishers, Car batteries and Fluoro globes and tubes at no charge all year round.

Mr Christensen reminds residents to cover their loads when travelling to their nearest Waste and Recycling Centre to avoid costly fines.

"The rules are pretty simple, sort your waste from recycling, cover your load and bring along your rates notice or drivers’ licence to prove that you live in the Snowy Valleys Council area, and you qualify," Mr Christensen said.
