Parents and supervisors of local learner drivers are encouraged to express their interest in a free workshop to be held in Tumut and Tumbarumba  in March this year.

Council is seeking expressions of interest from parents and carers of learner drivers to attend a free workshop that aims to provide a better understanding of what they can do to help learners be safer and better drivers.

Council Road Safety Officer Anthony Webb who is presenting the workshop says it is well worth attending.

“Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer,” Mr Webb said.

Run in conjunction with the NSW Centre for Road Safety, the workshop, Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents, carers and supervisors of learner drivers a better understanding of all the simple steps on how to teach a learner driver to drive safely.

The workshop covers topics such as; the new licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook, the benefits of on-road driving sessions and tips on supervising a learner driver.

The workshop also reinforces the important role of families in providing on-going support for young drivers in the early years of driving.

“Parents and supervisors who have attended this workshop in the past have found that it boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share their experiences with other parents and supervisors,” Mr Webb said.

The Graduated Licensing Scheme helps new drivers gain experience and become safer drivers by spreading the learning process over 4 years.

From Monday 20 November 2017, learner drivers need to complete six steps to progress from a learner to a full licence.
