Snowy Valleys Council is developing a new approach to waste management and is keen to talk rubbish with the community and local businesses at open meetings scheduled for 27 and 28 May in Tumbarumba and Tumut.

“How we collect and manage waste has a big impact on our natural environment and the beauty of our communities,” said Matthew Christensen, Director Assets and Infrastructure Snowy Valleys Council.

“As a result, we’re developing an ambitious new approach that is about more than just disposing of waste, it also focuses on how we can recover more resources and build a more sustainable and environmentally conscious service.”

The development of Snowy Valley Council’s Zero Waste Strategy will explore opportunities for improvement of the economic, social and environmental aspects of the waste sector as well as align the organisational approach with Regional, State and National climate change targets.

“Open community sessions are being held to give residents and businesses the opportunity to learn more about how we currently collect and process waste and let Council know what you think is important for local waste management,” said Mr Christensen.

“During the sessions we’ll be looking at the big picture, but we also want community feedback on the practical side of the service such as collection frequency, additional services desired, concerns about WHS, environmental non-compliance of sites, and communication about the service.”

Businesses are also being invited to put ideas forward in specific sessions about potential partnership and processing opportunities, and local options for ventures that value-add to waste material.
