A new community book showcasing young people’s responses to the 2019/2020 bushfires will be launched on Friday 18 June in Tumbarumba.

The Snowy Valleys Council’s Children’s Services working group partnered with the Be You Bush Fire Response Program to curate a community book with poems, stories, photos, artwork and collage created by children from preschool to Year 12 depicting their reflections and responses to the black summer bushfires.

Council’s Executive Director Community and Corporate Paul Holton said the purpose of the book is to celebrate and build upon the community’s connectedness and strengths and that all children’s services and local schools had been invited to participate.

“The book celebrates and showcases how children respond to themes of Resilience, Growth, Nature and Reflection.” said Mr Holton.

While the physical impact of bushfire is obvious, the mental health impact may not be, and these are often experienced differently by children.

“The impact of the bushfires on the children and youth of the Snowy Valleys should not be underestimated and in developing this community book we hope it helps in healing for all involved,” Mr Holton said.

The ‘Snowy Valleys Community Book’ will be launched at the Nest Café in Tumbarumba on Friday 18th June and will also be available for purchase at the Forage Merchant + Occasions, 75-77 Winston St, Tumbarumba from 9.00am to 12midday on Saturday 19th June.

The Bushfire Response Be You Program is led by Beyond Blue in partnership with Early Childhood Australia, headspace and Emerging Minds and provides targeted mental health support to schools and early learning services affected by the Black Summer bushfires across Australia.
