Demolition works are set to get underway this week at the disused Batlow Cannery site.

As part of the priority project to improve the site, Snowy Valleys Council has engaged a licenced contractor to demolish unusable structures and clear the area.

Acting Director Heinz Kausche said site mobilisation, which includes the location of heavy machinery onto the site and erection of safety fencing will commence on Monday 2 December 2019.

“Demolition works are scheduled to get underway on Tuesday 3 December and a significant portion of the demolition will be completed pre-Christmas, weather permitting,” Mr Kausche said.

“The scope of works includes a general site clean-up and removal of surface asbestos. It does not extend to removing the existing fencing, concrete slabs, hardstands or levelling the site.

“The demolition will include all buildings/sheds with the exception of the brick administration building. (marked as ‘F’ on the map)

“A review is also underway to assess the feasibility of retaining another brick building that forms part of building ‘A’ and we’ll know more about in the coming weeks”.

The contractors will be on-site Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm and Saturdays from 7am to 3pm with the intention to break for the Christmas/New Year period.

The full scope of work is scheduled to be completed by the end of February 2020.

Residences in close proximity to the Cannery site have been advised of the works and notices have been displayed in local businesses.

Funding of $500,000 was secured from the NSW Government's Major Projects Infrastructure Fund to enable Council to purchase the Cannery and undertake targeted demolition and cleanup of the site.
