Chef Black Olive Hosts Snowy Valleys NAIDOC Week Celebrations

In celebration of NAIDOC Week 2020 renowned chef Black Olive will host a special BBQ lunch at the Brungle Bush Tucker Garden and Yarning Circle on Saturday 14 November.
Snowy Valleys Council in partnership with Indyamarra Ngumbaay Aboriginal Corporation and the Brungle Health and Community Corporation is proud to be hosting this special event in celebration of NAIDOC week.
Chef Mark Olive, known as ‘The Black Olive’ is Australia’s most celebrated and renowned Indigenous chef. He has cooked around Australia and the world and has featured on a range of television cooking shows along with appearances at many special occasions and food events around the country.
Guests can expect to be treated to a very special NAIDOC BBQ menu curated and cooked by Mark that will feature his trademark style of cooking where native ingredients unique to Australia are used to infuse food and provide a distinct flavor and hero element to each dish.
The Brungle Community Bush Tucker Garden and Yarning Circle holds special significance to the local Indigenous community and is a place for a range of community gatherings and occasions each year. Visitors on the day can see how local Brungle residents have developed the area to incorporate native plants that can be used in cooking.
Prior to the special lunch event, the Brungle Bush Tucker Garden will be open to the general public from 10am on the day where Indigenous businesses and art markets will be set up showcasing a variety of local and regional Aboriginal owned enterprises. Local Indigenous organisation Indyamarra Ngumbaay Corporation is coordinating the market stalls as an opportunity to showcase Aboriginal businesses and art in the region.
Council’s Executive Director Community and Corporate Paul Holton says NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all in the Snowy Valleys to celebrate and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
“We are excited to have Mark Olive come to Brungle to host this special event as part of NAIDOC Week and we are honored to be partnering with the local Indyamarra Ngumbaay Aboriginal Corporation and the Brungle Health and Community Corporation to share this unique experience with the wider community,” he said.
Tickets are $15 per adult and $10 per child and spots are strictly limited in order to comply with current COVID public health restrictions. All ticket holders and patrons must register their contact details online or in person when purchasing tickets.

Hardcopy tickets will also be for sale from the Brungle Community Health Centre on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November from 8:30am to 3:30pm and at Council’s Customer Service Counter in Tumut during business hours or until tickets are sold out.
Electronic sign-in on the day will be active and guests will be reminded to safely social distance and adhere to the protocols developed for the special event.

NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremonies
Council will host flag raising ceremonies in Tumut and Tumbarumba on Monday the 9th of November at 9:00am outside the Riverina Highlands Building, and on Tuesday the 10th November outside Council Offices in Tumbarumba from 10:00am.
These ceremonies are open to the public, and people are reminded to safely social distance and refrain from attending if they are feeling unwell or displaying COVID symptoms.

The theme for this year’s NAIDOC week is Always Was, Always Will Be.
NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.
It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. It’s about all Australians celebrating that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our First Nation’s sovereignty was never ceded.
