SVC Community led projects in Tumut, Adelong and Talbingo were on display when representatives from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Riverina Murray Region visited some of the Government funded projects in the region recently.

Snowy Valleys Council Mayor James Hayes congratulated the community groups involved and said it was inspiring to see what the groups have achieved with their funding grants.

“We have a wonderfully creative community and so many motivated groups who are driving and delivering fantastic initiatives across the Region and the feedback from state government on their work is very positive,” said Cr Hayes.

Acting Director Phil Stone said community projects visited included refurbishments at the Gilmore Hall, surface upgrades at the Tumut and Talbingo Tennis Courts, facility upgrades at the Thomas Boyd Trackhead and works happening at the Adelong showgrounds and the Adelonia Theatre.

Current restoration works at the Gilmore Hall include a brand new floor, new front steps, painting of window frames and skirting and some minor plumbing and electrical work.

Three clay courts in Tumut were converted to synthetic grass, allowing the Tumut Tennis Club options to stage regional and state titles, while Talbingo’s two tennis courts have been converted from worn bitumen seal to synthetic grass, providing the community with a valuable recreation facility to enjoy.

Improvement works at Thomas Boyd Trackhead have provided much improved facility for visitors. The popular camping spot now boasts sealed roads and carparks, four new shade shelters and accessibility improvements with a concrete pathway linking the BBQ area and shower/toilet block with access from the sealed road, all ready for the summer camping influx.

Works in progress at the Adelong Showground include upgrades to the sound system, kitchen refurbishments and upgrades to power supply.

Facelift works at the Adelonia Theatre are also underway with repairs to the ceiling, eaves, roof trusses and front wall. A new commercial kitchen is planned, and an extension to the rear of the building will allow for a new disabled toilet to be constructed. New male and female toilets and a changeroom will finish off the upgrades at this vital community asset.

Mr Stone said the Department are planning another visit in the coming months to review more of the region’s fantastic community led projects.

Snowy Valleys Council received over $2.965M in funding from round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Grants and over $1.267M are community led projects.
