Community Transport Volunteers Recognised

Tumut District Community Transport volunteers received certificates of recognition for their contribution to the community at the recent 2019 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Volunteers from across the NSW South Coast and Southern Tablelands were recognised for their outstanding contribution to volunteering at a special ceremony in Queanbeyan on Friday 23 August 2019.
Tumut District Community Transport volunteers Anita Killelea, Bruce Oliver, Carol Feige, Kaye Sturt, Sue Post, Michael Olditch, Bob Moffatt, John Dickeson and Jaen Dickeson were all recognised for their outstanding service.
Snowy Valleys Council Mayor Cr James Hayes congratulated the recipients and said volunteers make an enormous contribution to local communities.
“I’d like to thank and congratulate all the volunteers who were recognized for their service to the community,” said Cr Hayes.
“Without community transport, many people would struggle to do what most of us take for granted like getting to medical, social and personal appointments.
“Community transport volunteers donate their time and skills to help build a stronger community that we can all benefit from and they are to be commended”.
Tumut District Community Transport Volunteers drive over one million kilometres per year including important transport links to Wagga Wagga (and other regional centres) providing group or individual transport to those who are aged, frail and/or have disabilities, or are transport disadvantaged.
Volunteers also help coordinate fundraising activities to assist with the out-of pocket expenses and future vehicle replacement requirements, as well as supporting local community events.
The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards is an annual program run by The Centre for Volunteering and has grown to become one of the largest celebrations of volunteering across the country.
Established in 2007 by The Centre for Volunteering the awards recognise the outstanding efforts of volunteers in NSW, and promotes the importance of volunteering to the community. In 2019 the Awards program recognised more than 120,000 volunteers across NSW in front of guests, media, family and friends.
