Snowy Valleys Council is encouraging local citizens with a knowledge and appreciation of their community and the people living in it to nominate to become part of the inaugural 2020 SVC Australia Day Committee.

“This is an opportunity to be involved not only in the official celebrations but also in rewarding those in the community that have excelled in supporting and giving back to the Snowy Valleys community,” said Mayor Cr James Hayes.

“Council is looking for community members from across the Snowy Valleys region to apply,” said Cr Hayes.  “We are looking for a diverse range of people who are passionate about making sure the unsung heroes in our community are recognised for their efforts”.

At their September council meeting Councillors resolved to host one official Snowy Valleys Australia Day Awards ceremony in Tumut from 2020.

Council’s Acting Director Phil Stone said the SVC Australia Day Committee is responsible for recommending award recipients to Council as well as the planning and conducting of the official Snowy Valleys Australia Day event with assistance from council staff.

“Applicants must be over 18 years of age and need to be able to make three meetings over December and January,’ said Mr Stone.

The committee will include eight community members, three Councillors and one Council staff member.

A panel of Councillors and staff will assess the committee applications and successful applicants will be notified by the end of November with the first committee meeting scheduled for early December.

Cr Hayes said communities who traditionally organised local Australia Day celebrations in their town/village would not be affected by the move to hold one official Snowy Valleys Australia Day ceremony.

“Council will continue to provide support to local Australia Day committees in the townships of Tumbarumba, Adelong, Batlow and Talbingo to host their own event unique to their community,” he said.

The inaugural Snowy Valleys Australia Day Awards celebration will be held in Tumut’s Stockwell Gardens on the morning of 26 January 2020.

Applications to join the 2020 SVC Australia Day Committee can be downloaded from council’s website.

Hard copies are also available from Council Libraries and Council Customer Service counters in Tumbarumba and Tumut.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 15 November 2019
