Council is seeking quotes from professional service consultants to develop a Redevelopment Plan and Business Case for the site of the disused Batlow Cannery.

Council’s Acting Director Phil Stone said the revitalisation of the site provides the potential for economic growth in Batlow.

“The development of a plan and business case will help Council in determining the most effective way to redevelop the site moving forward,” he said.

Council received funding from round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Grants to develop the business case.

Mr Stone said one outcome sought from the redevelopment plan is to improve the appearance of the site and enhance the overall amenity of Batlow.

“We are seeking quotes from specialised service consultants for the development and delivery of a strategic plan that includes concept plans, commercial modelling and consumer and market demand analysis as well as consideration of the historical significance of the site to the Batlow community,” Mr Stone said

“The redevelopment plan and business case will also need to align with Council’s Economic Development Strategy and Destination Management Plan,” he added.

Council received a NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Major Infrastructure Grant to purchase the site and undertake some limited site clean-up following community consultation that identified the improvement of the derelict site as a priority for the Batlow community.

Late last year Council sought Expressions of Interest from commercial entities to put forward proposals for potential uses of the site. These will be further considered as part of the overall plan and business case that is to be developed.

Mr Stone said the redevelopment plan and business case will also assist in identifying potential sources of external funding and investment attraction that may be required depending on what is identified.

“Once a successful consultant is appointed there will a process of consultation and engagement with Council staff, and business and community stakeholders before a final report is presented to Council in 2020,” he said.
