On Friday 17 September, Snowy Valleys Council celebrated Australian Citizenship Day hosting citizenship ceremonies for fifteen of the community’s newest Australian citizens

The conferees from six countries, including New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines became Australian citizens as part of virtual ceremonies hosted from Council Chambers in Tumut.

Mayor James Hayes said although the ceremonies were held online it was still a moving and bonding occasion for everyone involved.

“Australian citizenship is a shared identity and a common bond which unites all Australians while respecting our diversity,” he said.

Taking their pledges last week were six individuals and three family groups, all currently residing in the Snowy Valleys.

“It was my great pleasure to officially preside over welcoming these new Australian citizens to our community, while reflecting and celebrating what’s great about being Australian,” Cr Hayes said.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day.

Australian Citizenship Day provides an occasion for individuals, schools, community groups and organisations to reflect on the contributions of citizens to local communities.

Even with lockdowns across the country, it’s anticipated that more than 140 ceremonies will take place by local councils and community groups across Australia, with more than 7,000 people invited to become new citizens.
