Summer Weekend of Waste

Summer Waste Weekend

Residents of Snowy Valleys Council can dispose of their accumulated waste for free at the Adelong, Batlow, Talbingo or Tumut waste and recycling centres on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December across the Summer Waste Weekend.

“Residents can bring in up to 1 cubic metre of general non-recyclable waste per day. A cubic metre is about 4 large wheely bins, or a standard ute load, standard box trailer load or a standard large mattress,” said Council’s Waste Management Officer, Mr Ken Fletcher.

“There are some exceptions - dangerous goods and liquid waste (other than motor oil) will not be accepted, and green waste is accepted at all centres.

E-waste can only be taken into the Tumut waste and recycling centre with a limit of two standard passenger car tyres, as long as they don’t have the rims still fitted,” he said.

To qualify, residents must separate recyclables from their general waste.

Council continues to support recycling initiatives through the Community Recycling Centre at the Tumut Waste and Recycling facility.

This new facility accepts both oil and acrylic paints, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, automotive and single use batteries, smoke detectors, fluorescent tubes and bulbs and used motor / cooking oils.

Items that are too good to throw out can be donated to the Re-Use Shop at the Tumut Waste and Recycling Centre.

“The waste weekends provide a great chance to clear out the shed or backyard of unwanted materials, and the summer weekend is a good opportunity to do that final clean out before Christmas,” he said.

From July 1 this year, Waste Weekends are also being held twice per year at the Tumbarumba and Khancoban waste centres, as a result of a review of waste services and charges across the council area.

The two dedicated weekends for Khancoban and Tumbarumba are in spring and autumn, with the next waste weekend scheduled for 3rd and 4th March 2018 for these two centres.
