Tumbarumba Nominated for Top Tourism Town

Public voting is now open to elect Tumbarumba as the top town in NSW.

Tumbarumba is one of just 25 towns on the finalist list of for the inaugural NSW Top Tourism Town Awards - towns with less than 5,000 people.

Snowy Valleys Council nominated Tumbarumba to the NSW Tourism Industry Council in a bid to showcase the town as a tourism destination worthy of celebrating.

Council’s Executive Director Community and Corporate Paul Holton said the Awards were an opportunity to shine a light on the whole region and encouraged the public to get behind the town as a holiday destination.

“We are very proud of the Visit Snowy Valleys brand and that Tumbarumba and the region are being increasingly recognised as a destination of choice, with a variety of activities on offer,” he said.

The awards provide communities the opportunity to showcase what makes their town special and unique, with the aim of encouraging tourism development, increasing visitation and driving the visitor economy of NSW.

Towns across NSW were invited to nominate themselves and were required to submit an inspiring editorial, a three- or four-day itinerary, an image gallery and a video to support their nomination, which were then formally judged by a panel of 12 leading tourism experts.

Mr Holton said Council’s Place Activation Team worked on the submission and even though Tumbarumba was the nominated town, the video and itinerary demonstrate that Tumbarumba can be used as a base to access the wider Snowy Valleys region.

“Our submission focused on outdoor activities, including the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail and local food and beverage offerings. The submission also made it clear that the area is accessible to all demographics including families, couples and older travelers,” he said.

The NSW Tourism Industry Council inaugural awards have two categories; towns with over 5000 residents and towns with fewer than 5000 residents.  Forty-one towns were nominated – 25 in smaller town category and 16 in the larger town category.

The public vote will count for 50% of the final tally, and the judges vote for the other 50%. Winners will be announced at the Local Government NSW Destination & Visitor Economy Conference on Thursday 27 May 2021 and will represent NSW at the Australian Top Tourism Awards later this year.
