Wastewater Improvement Works at Glen Estate
Published on 17 September 2024
Council is progressing works to improve the wastewater pump station adjacent to The Glen Estate in Tumut.
The pump station improvement works will add additional emergency storage for peak flows, extreme weather events and other emergency situations such as power loss or pump failure.
Improvement works include the installation of two 70,000 litre underground storage tanks, and associated pipework and controls which will be positioned on the edge of the existing stormwater detention basin.
The existing pump station is around 15 years old and with continued development in the area, the works are important to help protect the environment from possible wastewater overflows and contamination to downstream properties and waterways.
Council evaluated several upgrade options for the pump station, and the installation of underground storage tanks was the preferred solution to ensure that capacity issues to the downstream reticulation network would not cause overflows.
The underground tanks will also allow a longer response time in emergencies, extending the time for staff to resolve issues before environmental impacts occur.
There have been some concerns raised around potential flooding impacts on the Glen Estate due to the works, however, the stormwater detention basin volume will only be reduced by around 1% and will have no impact on adjacent properties.
The work is on track to be completed and the tanks operational by the end of September 2024. A letterbox drop update will be provided to all adjoining residents in the coming week.
Council continues to evaluate water and wastewater reticulation systems for constraints or capacity issues to ensure suitable levels of service can be maintained for the community while also limiting impacts on the environment.
