Work is underway on upgrades to Wondalga Road to support the increased heavy-vehicle movements required as a result of bushfire recovery activities and the reestablishment of the forestry industry.

Close to $1million will be spent upgrading the Selwyn Street section of Wondalga Road, between Batlow Road and Greenhills Access Road to ensure the roadway is suitable for a high volume of B-Double and domestic users.

Snowy Valleys Council Mayor James Hayes said he was pleased with the haste in which Government funding was made available for the essential upgrades.

“The upgrade of the Wondalga Road intersection is one of our key Advocacy Priorities and so it is a fantastic result to see this work now underway and that our request for funding support was initiated,” Cr Hayes said.

“The intersection recorded a significant increase in heavy vehicle traffic as a result of forestry bushfire salvage works and we expect traffic movements to continue to increase as timber plantations are reestablished,” said Cr Hayes.

The $980,000 improvement project includes new road pavement, culverts, stormwater drainage, asphalt overlay and other associated works.

Snowy Valleys Council received $480,000 from the Government’s Bushfire Industry Recovery Package, $255,000 from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and will invest $245,000 from its own General fund to finance the project.

The roadworks are scheduled to be carried out between February and May, 2021 weather dependent.
