Snowy Valleys Council is closing the loop on food and garden waste by hosting a colouring competition focused on engaging young children in conversations around the organics FOGO bin.

The Scrap Together competition provides a fun and interactive way for council to help teach children about sustainability and how to make the world a cleaner and brighter place.

The competition is open to children across the Snowy Valleys region and all entries will go in the draw to win one of six Eco Book prizes.

Kids can simply cut out the colouring entry printed in their local newspaper or pick up a hard copy from Council’s customer service counters and local Libraries.

Completed entries can then be dropped back to our customer service counters, Libraries or posted to Scrappy Comp, 76 Capper St Tumut NSW 2720, by Wednesday 30 November 2022.

The Scrap Together education campaign is run in partnership with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and aims to help residents get the most out of their Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside collection service.

Steps to get the most out of your Organics bin:

  • Recycle your food regularly - Put your green-lid organics bin out for collection every week, even if it is not full.
  • Make every scrap count:  Ensure all food scraps go into your FOGO bin, including meat, fish and dairy.
  • Control odours by freezing smelly scraps until bin night.
  • Ensure plastic and steel containers go into your yellow lid recycling or your red lid bin.
  • Use only Council supplied compostable bin liners or newspaper to line your caddy.
  • Eat more of your food - write a weekly menu plan and make a shopping list, so you only buy what you need. Recycling food is great but eating it is better.
