More than 500 students from schools across the Snowy Valleys region recently participated in hands-on environmental education workshops supported by Snowy Valleys Council and conducted by leading NSW sustainability educators EnviroMentors.

The education workshops were aimed at inspiring young people to become environmental champions and cultivate future leaders in recycling and waste reduction.

The participating schools included Adelong Public School, Franklin Public School, Khancoban Public School and Tumbarumba Public School.

The student workshops covered topics such as "Composting and Worm Farming" and "Garbage to Garden," educating students on waste reduction in a fun and hands on way.

All students showed great enthusiasm for learning about diverting waste from landfill and were already familiar with Council’s green lidded Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.

Adelong Public School students explored the "Garbage to Garden" workshop. Many shared stories about their home gardens and were eager to plant the seedlings they received during the session.

Franklin Public School participated in 13 "Composting and Worm Farming" workshops over three days. The sessions inspired the school to reinstate their edible garden, compost, and worm farm as part of their science lessons.

Students from Tumbarumba and Khancoban schools also joined the Composting and Worm Farming workshops. They enjoyed the sessions, asked lots of great questions, and showed keen interest in the waste sorting game.

This unique education program was made available to local schools in the Snowy Valleys thanks to funding through the Canberra Region Joint Organisation of which Snowy Valleys Council is a member.
