Connecting Water and Sewerage

Find information on connecting septic tanks on rural properties, installing rain water tanks and dealing with Liquid Trade Waste

Septic Tank Systems

Hundreds of rural residents in the region rely on On-Site Sewage Management (OSSM) systems to treat their wastewater.

The most common systems in the Snowy Valleys area are Septic Tanks with absorption trenches, or Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems with irrigation areas.

Ensuring you have the right type of onsite wastewater system for your household, size and land features is critical to protecting water quality in the drinking water catchments.

Rain Water Tanks

Council is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment and supports those residents who are willing to install domestic rain water tanks in order to conserve water and enhance the environment.

Up to 40% of a household's water use can be replaced with rain water, thus reducing demand on the town supply whilst saving you money on your water rates.

If you live in rurally, rain water is probably already an important source of your water. If you live in town and are connected to the town water supply, installing a rain water tank gives you a free personal water supply to use during times of enforced water restrictions.

Installing a Rainwater Tank

Before installing your tank, check that it meets building requirements.  Whether you need approval or not depends on various factors such as:

  • Zoning of your property
  • Size of the tank/s
  • Proposed location of  the tanks on the property
  • Whether any cut or fill is needed

If your plans require planning approval, you'll need to apply for a Complying Development Certificate or Development Consent - for more information on these please see our Building & Development information

Liquid Trade Waste

Liquid trade waste is defined as: 'all liquid wastes discharged into the sewerage system, other than domestic sewage' and needs to be approved by Council under Section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993.

The discharges of trade waste are required to enter into formal trade waste agreements with Council and must comply with the relevant statuary regulations and requirements. All non-residential properties discharging liquid trade waste to the sewerage system will be inspected by Snowy Valleys Council to ensure compliance to the conditions within their agreement. Typically a trade waste agreement is valid for 5 years.

Trade waste is a by-product which results from an activity that generates a waste requiring pre-treatment and disposal in accordance with Legislative requirements and State guidelines.

Examples of this regulated discharge include:

  • Food shops
  • Bakeries
  • Supermarkets
  • Restaurants
  • Hotels, Motels, Clubs and Hostels
  • Hospitals
  • School canteens
