Snowy Valleys Council has been recognised with a Highly Commended award in the Waste Avoidance category at the 2025 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns Awards.

The award celebrates Council’s commitment to reducing waste through its Zero Waste Strategy 2019-2030 which has reshaped waste management and resource recovery across the region.

Mayor Julia Ham said the recognition reflects council and community efforts and innovations.

“From households and schools to local partnerships and new facilities, the Snowy Valleys has shown what’s possible when everyone plays a part in reducing waste.

Congratulations to the hard working and dedicated team who are working to make SVC a better place for us to live. We are all grateful for your vision,” she said.

The judges praised the success of the FOGO service, the Gilmore Composting Facility, and Council’s practical, community-focused approach. Feedback from the event showed Snowy Valleys is setting a strong example for other regional councils.

Key achievements recognised by the judges:

  • 61% less waste to landfill
  • 6,500 households with FOGO bins
  • Local composting facility
  • Community and school education
  • Inclusive jobs with Valmar
  • NSW EPA + contractor partnerships

The awards were announced in Parkes on 12 October as part of the Homegrown Parkes festival celebrations.
