A team of proactive Tumut High School students joined forces with Snowy Valleys Council on Wednesday, 26 November, to tackle some of the town’s most persistent graffiti hotspots as part of a community-driven “Graffiti Removal Day”.

Seventeen senior leaders and Year 10 students took part, supported by Clontarf Academy students from Years 7 and 8. Together, the group targeted key locations in need of attention, including the TAFE bus shelter, the basketball stadium, the water tank and various public signs across Tumut.

The initiative was led by Tumut High School students and staff who were increasingly concerned about the rise in graffiti across the township and were motivated to take positive action.

Mayor Julia Ham commended the students for their leadership, teamwork and pride in their community.

“Initiatives like this play such an important role in keeping public spaces welcoming and well-maintained,” she said. “Congratulations to everyone involved.”

The group made strong progress, repainting the TAFE bus shelter and beginning work on other sites before deteriorating weather brought the day to an early close.

Their efforts were supported by Council, who provided the required equipment, including graffiti-removal chemicals, pressure washers, paint and protective wear, including gloves, masks, coveralls and safety glasses. Council also shouted lunch for all participants as a thank-you for their community spirit and hard work.

The collaboration reinforces Council’s ongoing commitment to support local schools and community groups to proactively maintain well-presented public spaces.
