Snowy Valleys’ residents are being encouraged to only dispose of non-recycled materials and to safely secure their loads when taking advantage of the next Waste Weekend on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March.

Waste Weekends complement Council’s regular waste collection service allowing residents to dispose of a range of household waste that doesn’t fit in the kerbside bins.

Council’s Executive Director Infrastructure Heinz Kausche said while the waste weekends are a great time to dispose of items like used mattresses, old carpets and white goods many people forget that recycled materials can be dropped off for free all year round.

“Cardboard, paper, steel and aluminium can all be disposed of for free at any time at all sites, and the Tumbarumba and Tumut Centres also accept e-waste, paint, motor oils, household batteries, gas bottles, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, car batteries and fluoro globes and tubes at no charge all year round,” Mr Kausche said.

Mr Kausche said that the Transfer Stations were also unable to accept any burnt materials.

“We have no capacity to deal with material burnt from the fires due to safety reasons and we encourage residents to wait for the Government’s clean-up program to ensure the material is disposed of safely and correctly,” he said.

Residents of Snowy Valleys Council can dispose of their accumulated waste at no extra cost over the first weekend in March at Adelong, Batlow, Khancoban, Talbingo, Tumbarumba and Tumut Waste and Recycling Centres.

Waste Weekends complement Council’s regular waste collection service allowing residents to dispose of a range of household waste that doesn’t fit in the kerbside bins.

Residents are limited to up to 1 cubic metre of general non-recyclable waste per day which is equivalent to approximately 4 large wheelie bins, or a standard ute load, or a standard box trailer load or a standard large mattress.

“We remind drivers to be mindful of other road users when accessing the transfer stations and if there is a need for queuing to please do so safely and be courteous of other vehicles,” Mr Kausche said.
