Water Leak Detection Program To Save Water
Published on 03 November 2025
Snowy Valleys Council is taking action to find and fix hidden leaks across the water network.
From 10 to 23 November 2025, a specialist team from LeakTech will be working throughout the region as part of the Active Leak Detection Project, funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).
Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Works, Duncan Mitchell, said the initiative is an important step towards reducing costs, improving efficiency, and ensuring long-term water sustainability.
"The collaboration with DCCEEW will allow us to proactively identify and address water losses that would otherwise go unnoticed, directly contributing to our long-term water security and operational efficiency,” said Mr Mitchell.
“By tackling leaks early, Council can save costs, protect infrastructure, and ensure a more reliable and sustainable water supply for residents.”
As part of the program, LeakTech will check for leaks in both the Council’s water network and on private properties.
Mr Mitchell said customer-side leaks represent a large opportunity for water conservation, as leaks can persist for months without detection.
“We’re asking residents to assist by allowing LeakTech staff safe access to household water meters and by securing pets during inspections,” he said.
“If a leak is found on the property side, Council will notify the owner so repairs can be arranged.”
The proactive program is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to responsible water management and sustainability. By working together, the community can help save valuable water and protect this essential resource for the future.
