The $40,000 surface refurbishment at the Bull Paddock is progressing without mishap and weather dependent, is planned for completion for the Winter sports season.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Assets Matthew Christensen said that once finished, the Bull Paddock project would enhance the quality of the sportsground.

“The upgrade will provide an invaluable facility for our local sports groups and help to attract sports competitions and other events into the area”, Mr Christensen said.

Works on the paddock started last October with the surface tilled and power harrowed, and line-planting of couch grass undertaken, followed by a top-dress of sand to ensure a level surface.

Mr Christensen said the project got off to a slow start as the warm Summer weather was very late, but since then the hotter weather has worked in the work team’s favour.

“The main soil profile works are now complete, and the couch grass sprigs have established well with a nice cover over the field”, Mr Christensen said.

Nutrient applications and weed treatment works are expected be done over the next couple of weeks.

“During the downtime the teams have been doing extra work on the turf wicket and irrigation to ensure the best outcome for the playing surface”, Mr Christensen explained

An essential final top-dress and over-sow with rye grass for winter sports will also be undertaken in the next few weeks weather permitting.

Mr Christensen said that Paddock user groups had been very supportive during the planned works.

“We would especially like to thank the Tumut Cricket Association for their patience and support during the project”, he said.

The affected area of the Bull Paddock included a large section on the northern end of the fields.

The availability of the entire field is weather and winter grass establishment dependent and Council will be communicating directly with user groups about access.
