The resurfaced southern ovals of the Bull Paddock Sportsground were put to the test when Tumut hosted the Southern Inland Rugby Juniors Gala Day over the weekend.

Director of Assets and Infrastructure Matthew Christensen says Council is pleased the two upgraded playing surfaces were ready in time for the club’s big event.

“Upgrade of the two southern ovals was a big undertaking that involved removing an estimated 1000 tonnes of existing vegetation and the planting of 1800 sqm of new turf. We had anticipated the ovals would re-open in early June, but it is always difficult to estimate how long it will take to establish new grass when progress is so weather dependent.

“The Bull Paddock is an important local and regional sporting facility that is now fit-for-purpose. We are really pleased the weather held out so the lines could be marked and the Tumut “Bullants” could host Gala Day over the weekend. No doubt the recently sealed Bull Paddock carpark was also put to the test by rugby supporters on Sunday”, Mr Christensen said.

A $297,130 boost from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund enabled Council to upgrade the surface of the two southern playing fields, improve drainage and install an automatic irrigation system. The adjacent car park was sealed with an additional allocation of $130,000 from round one of the NSW Stronger Communities Fund.
