Snowy Valleys Council is inviting expressions of interest for the development of a commercial business in the former Khancoban General Store.

Council’s Director Strategy, Community & Development Gus Cox said a functioning General Store was essential for the continued vibrancy and sustainability of Khancoban.

“We are keen to attract an energetic, worthwhile business to take up the lease, preferably a supermarket or general store proposal that would complement the existing businesses”, Mr Cox said.

Council purchased the vacant Khancoban General Store earlier this year after Council was made aware of strong community support to reestablish a retail business.

“We want to ensure that the store is developed to a high standard and operated in a manner that will encourage ongoing sustainability and tourism growth for the township,” Mr Cox said.

Khancoban was built during the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme and is surrounded by rivers and streams making it a popular fishing destination.

In the cooler months, Khancoban is an ideal base for day trips to the Thredbo snow fields, or cross country skiing in the back country. Recreational motorcyclists are also frequent visitors to the town and the nearby Murray 2 Power Station and Visitor’s Centre is a popular family attraction.

The General Store is centrally located at the Khancoban Shopping Centre and the site consists of one lot with existing store building including retail space with carpark frontage, storage space with laneway access, and a cool room with rear access.

Mr Cox said fit out of the store would depend on the nature of the expression of interest submitted by the successful applicant.

“We’re seeking EOIs for both purchase and development of a commercial business, or lease and development of a commercial business or joint venture with Council to develop and operate a commercial business,” Mr Cox explained

Expressions of Interest for the development close on 20 July.
