Tumbarumba sports will receive a $457,500 boost from the NSW Stronger Country Communities Fund for the development of a Bike Pump Track and essential upgrades to the Tumbarumba Sportsground.

Member for Albury Greg Aplin announced the funding at Tumbafest over the weekend.

Snowy Valleys Council Mayor James Hayes said the funding was an enormous bonus for the Tumbarumba community.

“New infrastructure like a pump track and upgrades to the sports ground will allow greater participation in sporting and outdoor activities by locals and visitors,” Clr Hayes said.

Funding of $308,000 has been allocated for the sportsground upgrade and $149,500 for development of the new bike pump track.

The NSW Government has committed $200 million over the next two years for applications to support local infrastructure projects that will improve amenity and help sustain the social bonds at the heart of strong regional communities.

“A bike pump track will enable the cycle community to grow via new beginner programs to get children on bikes, and build upon Tumbarumba's potential to become a significant cycling destination,” Clr Hayes said.

The proposed asphalt pump track will be built in the south-west corner of the Tumbarumba Creekscape park and provide a facility for children to learn and practice the skills required for mountain biking and riding the skate park.

Clr Hayes went on to say, “It will complement the existing infrastructure in the area, while broadening the facilities available for different age groups and abilities that are not currently catered for by the skate park.”

“It’ll be a fun and inclusive facility for all ages and visitors and locals alike. Young children on balance bikes or scooters can use it, right through to pro riders, as the same piece of track offers something for everyone.”

The Bike Pump Track project has been driven by Cycle Tumbarumba in partnership with Snowy Valleys Council.  Cycle Tumbarumba will contribute $50,000 towards the project.

Funding for the upgrade of the Tumbarumba Sports Ground will be used to improve drainage, install an automatic irrigations system and returf the oval.

Continued battering from Tumbarumba’s long, cold and wet winters have left the 50+ year old oval in a poor state of repair. When the conditions are dry, the frequent waterlogging creates a playing surface that is patchy and uneven, resulting in inconsistent conditions for a high standard of play.

Mayor Hayes said the upgrade will ensure the oval is fit-for-purpose and will result in a superior playing surface.

“It will benefit not only local sporting clubs but will give us the opportunity to attract visiting clubs here on a more regular basis,” Clr Hayes said.

‘‘The end product will be a high-calibre playing field which will be valued and utilised by not only its many user groups but the whole community.’’

Both projects will be advertised for tender applications with an expectation of completion with-in two years.
