The transformation of the Khancoban pool is underway with more than 100 cubic metres of concrete being poured on Tuesday 12 September.

The entire superstructure for the pool was poured in one day, utilizing seven trucks transporting concrete from Tumbarumba continuously, two concrete pumps and a work crew of around twenty specialist concreters and pool builders.

The $685,000 project has been supported by a $215,000 National Stronger Regions grant finalised in February this year, along with a healthy funding injection from Snowy Valleys Council and various Khancoban community groups.

Director Strategy, Community and Development Mr Gus Cox said that the project is part of Snowy Valleys Council’s commitment to improving the amenity and livability of its towns and villages.

“Providing a modern swimming facility for Khancoban is further investment in the town’s livability. It will contribute to the health and wellbeing of families, young people and older residents and provide another attraction for visitors over the summer months,” he said.

The upgraded pool complex will see the fifty year old steel pool replaced with a contemporary concrete and tiled structure.

“The project will include significant upgrades to the pools infrastructure such as the replacement of aging pipework and power supply, construction of an accessible ramp to the big pool and the construction of a brand new toddlers pool,” said Mr Cox.

The original 33 metre pool will be converted to a 25 metre competition length pool, which Mr Cox says, will help in increasing the efficiency of the pool operation.

“The original pool had a maximum depth of 3.5m to cater for high diving. We’ve taken on board advice from the community to ensure that we’ve maintained a 1.8m deep end in the new structure to allow for diving. It’s been an important consideration in the planning,” he said.

The project is on schedule to be completed by the beginning of December, weather depending.

“Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the pool in time for the peak summer swimming season,” Mr Cox said.
