Local Snowy Valleys’ communities are being encouraged to identify ways to promote road safety in their local area.

Applications are now open for round four of the NSW Community Road Safety Grants Program, with up to $30,000 available for local initiatives ranging from young driver education programs, radio campaigns to workshops for seniors.

Snowy Valleys Council Mayor James Hayes said local communities know their local streets and roads like the back of their hand and they are ideally placed to help improve road safety.

“The Community Road Safety Grants program provides an opportunity for community groups to implement small scale road safety projects to fundamentally improve road safety across the community,” Cr Hayes said.

The Community Road Safety Grants program provides funding to NSW community based groups to undertake projects to address specific road issues in the local community. Two categories of grants are available:

  • smaller projects, with up to $5,000 available for each idea
  • more substantial projects, worth up to $30,000

Council’s Road Safety Officer Anthony Webb said for people living in rural communities it can be easy to be complacent about road safety.

“The entire community has a responsibility towards road safety and all road users need to embrace safer behaviours at all times whilst travelling on our roads,” Mr Webb said.

Not-for-profit organisations, community groups, parents and citizens groups, are all eligible to apply for a grant to address local road safety issues.

Proposals need to demonstrate a road safety issue and propose an effective project concept to address the problem.

Some of the successful projects in round three of the grants included road safety workshops targeting culturally and linguistically diverse communities,

road safety seminars for newly arrived migrants, driver mentoring assistance for disadvantaged youth and an awareness campaign targeting driveway safety.
