Detective novels with a twist, trekking in Kosciuszko, a solo biking adventure and digital health care are all fascinating topics to be explored at a series of special interest talks the Tumut Library is hosting over in the coming weeks.

Council’s Coordinator Library Services Kristin Twomey said the series of talks was designed to appeal to a wide section of the community.

“By opening up our libraries to the community for these special interest talks, Council is creating an alternative for people to socialise, discuss ideas and learn about the writing craft and other topics of interest”, Ms Twomey said

On Monday 21 May award winning local author Sulari Gentill will talk about her writing methodology and how her most famous character, Rowley Sinclair, came to life.

Ms Twomey said she was looking forward to hearing Sulari talk about her writing approach and encouraged other budding writers to attend the author event for a real-life glimpse into the world of writing.

“We are extremely fortunate to have an award winning and internationally renowned author in our backyard and her books are extremely popular across the Council’s library network,” Ms Twomey said.

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network Staff will speak about the benefits of having a digital health record at a talk on Tuesday 22 May.

My Health Record is a national digital health record system which can contain your important health information such as allergies, medicine details, medical conditions and treatments which can be accessed through one system.

Ms Twomey said she was approached to host the My Health Record talk and thought it was a fantastic opportunity to assist the community in understanding this still relatively new technology.

“This talk is a great opportunity to learn more about the My Health Record and how it may be able to assist in managing your own and your family’s healthcare.” Ms Twomey said.

Tumut Library’s own Rhonda Twomey will recount her adventures of trekking from Kiandra to Kosciuszko on Friday 25 May.

Live the journey through Rhonda’s wonderful collection of photographs that illustrate a journey through our magnificent high country.

“Rhonda trekked through areas that most people will never have the opportunity to go to and encountered a vast array of wildlife on her journey,” Ms Twomey said.

The final talk, to be held on Friday 1 June is an author talk with Jeremy Scott whose book chronicles his solo cycling adventures from London to New Zealand.

Ms Twomey said given the burgeoning interest in cycling, Jeremy’s book about his ride from London to New Zealand seemed like the perfect talk for the Library to host.

“Jeremy is a Heart Foundation ‘Heart Hero Awardee’ and his story and photos from the road will leave you feeling genuinely inspired,” Ms Twomey said.

All talks begin at 11am and include a light lunch.  For more information visit Council’s website www.snowyvalleys.nsw.gov.au/libraries or call the Tumut Library on 6941 2581

“We hope to see a good response to these events, because more than anything, it’s about starting a conversation with people about reading and learning, and building a connection with the community,” Ms Twomey said.
