Resurfacing works, including irrigation and drainage are scheduled to get underway from 22 October as Council begins upgrades on the Tumbarumba Sports Field and Tumut Bull Paddock.

Snowy Valleys Council’s Director Assets and Infrastructure Matt Christensen said the work being undertaken will vastly improve the playing surface of both fields.

“Both grounds are invaluable facilities for our local sports and community groups, and upgraded playing surfaces help to attract sports competitions and other events into the area”, Mr Christensen said.

Both grounds will be provided with new automatic irrigation and sub surface drainage systems.

“The ovals have a history of becoming water logged during prolonged wet weather, and the works seeks to improve the reliability of these ovals as premier sports facilities within our community,” Mr Christensen said.

The grounds will be closed to the public from Monday 22 October and work will start with weed spraying in preparation for the construction work.  The construction area will be signposted and barriers will be in place.

Mr Christensen explained that Council had consulted closely with user groups who were all aware in advance of the field closure dates.

“The timing for these types of works will unfortunately always affect at least one group but undertaking the works at this time of year ensures that there will be warm soil temperatures for the seasonal grasses to establish,” Mr Christensen said

Funding for the works came from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund, with $297,130 allocated for the upgrades to the two southernmost fields at the Tumut Bull Paddock and $308,000 for the Tumbarumba sportsground upgrade.

Works for both sites include installation of irrigation, drainage and resurfacing and will be undertaken for Council by Gundagai group Excel Turf Pty Ltd.

There will be vehicle and machinery movement during working hours. Residents are asked to take care when using the remaining available sporting field’s locations.
