Building Peace and Resilience Workshop
Snowy Valleys Council and the Quest for Life Foundation are offering residents in the Snowy Valleys area fully subsidised places to Petrea King’s online program, Building Peace and Resilience in Bushfire Affected Communities on Tuesday 7 July.
“People affected by the shocking bushfires of 2019/20 haven’t really had the chance to recover before the Covid-19 virus took hold,” Petrea King said.
“The time immediately after the fires was spent dealing with the logistics of the disaster – loss of friends and family, lost livestock, finding somewhere to live, getting food and water and simply trying to carry on. Most people are in shock for the first 6 – 8 weeks after a traumatic event as they take on the enormity of what has happened.”
“Feeling irritable, anxious or angry along with feelings of sadness, grief or not being able to cope can consume us,” Petrea said, “and can damage our relationships which are already under strain."
“Trauma happens to the most primitive part of the brain; telling ourselves to toughen up just won’t work."
“If we’ve been under stress for a long time, we may need to consciously implement strategies to reduce our stress reaction, in order to activate our parasympathetic nervous system to restore our ability to rest, sleep and recover."
“Join us on 7 July to learn skills to manage trauma symptoms effectively, calm your mind and improve your wellbeing,” Petrea said.
