Australia Day 2025 in the Snowy Valleys

Preparations are underway throughout the Snowy Valleys for Australia Day events that the whole family will enjoy.
On the evening of Saturday the 25th of January, Council will host a special pre-Australia Day Civic Reception at the Batlow Literary Institute made possible with funding from the National Australia Day Council’s Australia Day 2025 grants program.
The Snowy Valleys Council Australia Day Awards will be presented at the dinner ceremony where invited nominees will be joined by Councillors and dignitaries.
Council will present awards in five categories: SVC Citizen of the Year, SVC Young Citizen of the Year, SVC Sportsperson of the Year, SVC Environmental Citizen of the Year and SVC Service to the Community.
Community groups will then host individual local Australia Day events on Sunday 26 January with council’s support.
Batlow
- 8.30am in Memorial Park
- Hosted by the Rotary Club of Batlow
- Free breakfast bacon, sausages, eggs, juice, damper, coffee /tea
- Lawn Games, Music, and Awards Ceremony
- Special guest local ambassador, Stan Grant
- Please bring your own fold-up chairs or picnic rug
Tumbarumba
- 10.30am in Goldfields Park near the Rotunda
- Hosted by the Rotary Club of Tumbarumba
- Includes a short address on community spirit by Tumbarumba’s Australia Day Ambassador, Debbie Gadd
- Free BBQ lunch including lamington and cold drink
- Live music will be supplied before, during and after the ceremony by the band JNR Legends supported by soloist Jess Griffiths
- St Jude's Anglican Church will provide some lawn games
- Please bring your own fold-up chairs or picnic rug
Adelong
- 11am at the Adelong S&C Club
- Hosted by the Adelong Progress Association
- Free morning tea provided by Adelong’s awesome volunteer ladies
- Special guests Adelong’s Australia Day Ambassador, The Hon. Mick Veitch and the Snowy Valleys Australia Day Ambassador, Bob Turner
- Come along and enjoy this event which is focused on highlighting those who go above and beyond for the community
Tumut
- 11.30am at the Montreal Community Theatre, Russell Street
- Hosted by Tumut’s Montreal Community Theatre Committee
- Includes presentation by Tumut’s Australia Day Ambassador, Stan Grant
- Followed by a free barbecue lunch served by the Rotary Club of Tumut and a family-friendly Australian Movie, ‘Runt’ for all to attend.
Talbingo
- 5.00pm at Dawn’s Camp Kitchen, Miles Franklin Memorial Park
- Hosted by the Talbingo Community Association
- Free BBQ commences at 5pm followed by Australia Day ceremony at 6pm
- With special guest Snowy Valleys Australia Day Ambassador, Bob Turner and the presentation of local awards
- BBQ, sausage sandwiches, salad, soft drinks and ice blocks will be provided

Snowy Valleys Australia Day Ambassador
The 2025 Snowy Valleys Australia Day Ambassador is Mr. Bob Turner one of Australia’s most recognisable and respected sports personalities. Best known for his basketball coaching, marketing, and administration, Bob is renowned throughout many businesses and sporting organisations for his marketing and management ability and his pioneering work with NBL teams the Canberra Cannons, Newcastle Falcons, Singapore Slingers and the Sydney Kings. Bob developed marketing and sponsorship programs that set the standard for the NBL during the early 80’s and early ‘90s.
He was honoured by the NBL in 1999 as a Hall of Fame inductee and in 2023 inducted into the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame. His personal success as a basketball player, coach, marketer, administrator and businessman combine to make him an authority and excellent speaker on a variety of issues including team building, motivation, success and leadership. Bob has built a unique skill set over 48 years in Australia and has proudly earned a reputation as 'Mr. Have A Go'!
