Snowy Valleys Council has opened nominations for the 2021 Australia Day Awards, which recognise and honour people who make an outstanding contribution to their local communities.

Mayor James Hayes said the awards are an integral part of the Australia Day celebrations, and is encouraging people to nominate the unsung heroes in our community.

“Each year it’s a privilege to celebrate the individuals and groups within our community who go above and beyond to achieve their best and inspire and serve others,” Cr Hayes said.

“This past year has presented many challenges, so it is more important than ever to recognise, celebrate, and honour the local heroes who have gone above and beyond to support our region and  community,” he said.

Nominations are now open for the Snowy Valleys Australia Day Awards in the following categories:

  • Snowy Valleys Citizen of the Year – recognises individuals aged 30 and over who have made an outstanding contribution to the Snowy Valleys community over many years.
  • Snowy Valleys Young Citizen of the Year - recognises individuals aged 16-30 who have made an inspirational contribution to the Snowy Valleys community.
