Community Experiences Sought for Tumbarumba Flood Study
Published on 26 October 2023
Council is keen to hear from locals about their experiences with flooding events around Tumbarumba to help inform a Tumbarumba Flood Study.
Community members are invited to share their local knowledge and flooding experiences in person at a Community Pop-Up to be held in early November.
Major floods occurred in the Tumbarumba area in 1891, 1903, 1905, 1931, 1960, 1974, 2010, 2012, 2020, and more recently in November 2021.
Council is keen to collect community records of these events such as photographs of flood marks or observations of flood behaviour that locals may have witnessed.
Tumbarumba Flood Study Pop-up
- Friday 10 November 2023
- 9.00am - 11.00am
- Council Building, Meeting Room 2, Bridge Street, Tumbarumba
The aim of the Tumbarumba Flood Study is to provide an understanding of the nature and extent of potential flooding from the Tumbarumba Creek, and its tributaries including Sheep Station Creek, Pound Creek, Doctors Creek Pipeclay Gully (mainstream flooding), and local stormwater runoff that drains to these waterways (overland flow).
The first stage of the study development involves the collection, compilation, and review of all available information, including valuable community knowledge and experiences of past floods.
When finalised the Study will give Council a better understanding of the current flood risk to the Tumbarumba community and support a range of Council functions including development, planning, community education, and mitigation works.
This project is supported by the NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Program which aims to reduce the impacts of flooding and flood liability on individual owners and occupiers and to minimise private and public losses resulting from flooding.
