Council Advances Towards 100% Renewable Energy
Published on 01 April 2025
Snowy Valleys Council is taking a significant step towards sustainability with a comprehensive review of its energy supply agreements.
The initiative, conducted by a specialist consultancy engaged by Council has identified substantial cost savings while paving the way for a transition to 100% renewable energy.
The review examined Council’s network tariffs, retail electricity agreements, and streetlighting assets, identifying opportunities to reduce energy costs and emissions.
By restructuring agreements and switching to more competitive retail energy providers, Council stands to save approximately $173,700 annually while cutting carbon emissions by 2,186 tonnes per year.
A key component of the strategy involves transitioning Council’s 140 small sites to a new agreement through Buy NSW, which provides access to 100% GreenPower.
This move alone is projected to save Council $207,022 per year in energy bills while significantly reducing Council’s carbon footprint.
For its nine large sites and streetlighting assets, Council will undertake a public Request for Tender process, allowing for competitive pricing on renewable energy supply ranging from 50% to 100%.
By embracing renewable energy, Council is not only reducing its operational costs but also contributing to broader carbon reduction goals, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable future for the community.
