Snowy Valleys Councillors pay tribute to the late Russell Stevenson who passed away recently aged 98.

“On behalf of Snowy Valleys Council, we’d like to acknowledge Mr Stevenson’s enduring legacy to the Tumbarumba region and community and extend our sincere sympathies and deepest condolences to his family,” said Mayor James Hayes.

Mr Stevenson started in Tumbarumba working for Council and records show he became a long serving councillor, serving as Tumbarumba Shire President in 1970-71 and as a Tumbarumba Shire Councillor in 1974 and 1978.

He was also the inaugural President of the Tumbarumba Rotary Club 60 years ago and participated in projects over many years.

“Russ was a great friend and confidant to me and a terrific community leader,” said Councillor Bruce Wright.

“He was with me and the Rotary Club of Tumbarumba on a FAIM trip to Mainohana High School in PNG to build a school home economics block. He also went on a Rotary Friendship Exchange to India.  He was a very enthusiastic member of both groups,” said Cr Wright.

Councillor Julia Ham remembers Mr Stevenson as a polite gentleman.

“Russell’s legacy continues with the shop he started ‘Russell Stevenson’s Clothing Store’.  He ran it with great pride providing quality and fashionable clothes to the people of Tumbarumba and Tumut,” Cr Ham said.

It is understood that Mr Stevenson has been laid to rest in the Tumbarumba cemetery.
