Residents interested in standing for the upcoming NSW Local Government Elections are invited to attend a comprehensive online Candidate Information Session.

Snowy Valleys Council is hosting the free webinar to be delivered online from 5.30pm on Wednesday 12 June 2024.

The session presents an indispensable opportunity for prospective candidates to better understand the roles and responsibilities of being an elected member of council.

Attendees can join remotely from their homes/offices or choose to participate from Council offices in Tumut or Tumbarumba if they have home internet connectivity issues.

The session aims to provide valuable insights and guidance for potential candidates, covering key areas including:

  • The benefits and importance of Local Government
  • Understanding the role of Council, the role of the Councillor and Mayor
  • A typical council structure
  • Challenges of the role and how to meet them
  • The importance of diverse representation on Council
  • Representing community representation, speaking on key issues and how to do this confidently
  • Meeting procedures and rules of debate
  • Support available including information, networks and professional development
  • Introduction to local government jargon and what it means
  • Putting it together: making the commitment
  • Q& A

The session will be facilitated by David Evans who brings over fifty years of extensive experience in local government, with a focus on senior management roles spanning four decades at Maitland City Council.
