Snowy Valleys Council is using Local Government Week (August 3-9) as an opportunity to reflect on a busy year, with council workers and the Snowy Valleys’ community facing down unprecedented challenges.

Mayor James Hayes said the theme of this year’s Local Government Week – “Councils Do” – was an apt way of describing the broad range of activities Council had undertaken to support communities in the past 12 months.

“This year has been particularly challenging, with the perfect storm of drought, bushfires, floods and a global pandemic making a massive impact on our community,” he said.

“On many occasions council worked closely with the community to respond to those events and provide support, all the while continuing to manage its ongoing day-to-day responsibilities.”

Council’s CEO Matthew Hyde said Local Government Week was the perfect time for people across the region to become more acquainted with the services offered by their local council.

“Local Government Week is not about blowing our own trumpet, it’s about making residents aware of the range of services councils have on offer to make their community a fantastic place to work and live.” he said.

“We go far beyond roads, rates and rubbish. Councils are the hub of their communities, responsible for community events, childcare centres, libraries, sports fields, parks, pools, museums, building and development assessment, galleries and even cemeteries helping to promote a healthy economy and build our community.”

To celebrate Local Government Week Councillors will host a mock council meeting with students from the Talbingo Primary School and join the students in unveiling the name of the new Talbingo adventure playground.

A video will also be released via social media showcasing the many services that Council undertakes and participates in on behalf of the community.

“We want our community to know we are here for them and highlight the many ways we can help”, Mr Hyde said.
