Seniors Expo

Seniors across the Snowy Valleys will have many chances to celebrate during March as part of this year’s NSW Seniors Festival week.

The annual NSW Seniors Festival celebrates the role and contribution of older adults to local communities throughout Australia and is held this year from 11-24 March.

Snowy Valleys Council is hosting several events across the week with support from the NSW Government which should appeal to a large cross-section of the local senior community.

On Wednesday the 13th of March seniors can have a day out at the Snowy Valleys Seniors Expo being held at the Tumbarumba High School’s Multipurpose Centre.

Attendees can enjoy a sit-down luncheon, live musical entertainment from The Australia Amy Band Kapooka, and the opportunity to connect with a range of organisations and local services ready to help and support seniors living in the Snowy Valleys region.

Council is supplying coach travel to and from the venue stopping in Tumut, Adelong, Batlow, Tumbarumba and Khancoban (dependant on interest) and entry to the Expo is free. Bookings are essential to attend the luncheon and entertainment portion of the day.

On Thursday 21 March Council is hosting a seniors day out at Yesteryear Plantations.

The day out costs just $10 per person and includes return travel via coach from Tumut, Adelong, Batlow, and Tumbarumba, morning tea with a tour of the operating Distillery, and a homemade country buffet lunch. Plus, natural oils, household cleaning products and gifts can be purchased from the shop. To book for these events call the Tumbarumba Multi Service Outlet on 02 6948 9161.

Council’s Libraries also host events during the Seniors Festival including Brain Games at the Tumbarumba Library on Tuesday 19 March and the Tumut Library on Wednesday March 20 starting at 10.30am.  Come along and join in trivia, brain teasers, and friendly conversation.  It’s free and all are welcome. Grandparents are invited to a special story time at the Tumut Library on Thursday 14 March and the Tumbarumba Library offers a home delivery service for those who have difficulty getting out. To find out more contact your local Library team.

Other events for Seniors include Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s Exercise Classes through their Active and Healthy Program. For a gold coin donation, seniors 55 and over can improve their balance, strength and flexibility while having fun.  Classes are held weekly in Batlow, Tumut, Adelong and Tumbarumba.

The NSW Seniors Festival is the largest festival for people over 60 in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting up to 500,000 seniors across the State to events. NSW Seniors Festival is presented by the Department of Family and Community Services.

It’s an opportunity to meet old friends or make new ones and experience the joy of being together, sharing a laugh or even trying something new.

Further information about the Council-hosted events can be found on Council’s website.
