National Gallery’s Art Cases on Display at the Tumut Library

The National Gallery of Australia’s 2023 Touring Program has been announced and two Art Cases are now on display at the Tumut Library.

The Art Cases have been designed to encourage learning and provoke conversation through creativity and engagement and have been developed to be more inclusive by elevating women and First Nations artists.

The two cases currently on display at the Tumut Library represent themes of Bodies (Red case), and Form and Function (Orange case) and contain art that can be explored through touch.

Council’s Library Co-ordinator Rhonda Twomey said it was an honour to be able to host the Art Cases at the Tumut Library for locals to discover and enjoy.

“We invite all art lovers and interested people to drop into the Tumut Library to experience the suitcase exhibition for themselves,” said Ms Towmey.

The Art Cases program is a core part of the National Gallery’s touring program. It comprises five art-filled cases that travel to schools, libraries, community centres, galleries and aged care homes, where the works are discovered and handled by adults and children of all ages for both exhibition and hands-on programs such as art making and story-telling.

National Gallery Director Dr Nick Mitzevich said the National Gallery has been working closely with Snowy Valleys Council so people in the Snowy Valleys region can enjoy and experience the national collection beyond its base in Kamberri/Canberra.

‘Art is for all Australians and I look forward to seeing their national collection reach the regions more and more through our loans and touring exhibition programs’ said Dr Mitzevich.

From July, the National Gallery will share more of its collection with regional and suburban galleries as part of the sharing the national collection initiative, funded under the Australian Government’s new National Cultural Policy.

‘This support will allow us to share more of the national collection with more Australians and local communities – making it a truly national collection,’ Mitzevich said.

Touring the collection would not be possible without the support of the National Gallery’s major donors and key philanthropic partners.

The Art Suitcases are on display at the Tumut Library until the 10th of March 2023.  Library opening hours are Monday to Friday - 10.00am to 6.00pm and Saturday - 9.00am to 12.00pm.
