FOGO Trommel Screen

A new impressive piece of equipment that will play a vital role in Snowy Valleys Council’s organics processing system is now onsite in Batlow where staff are learning how to use it.

Funded with the support of a $946,924 grant from the NSW Environmental Trust, delivered in partnership with the NSW EPA, the trommel screen will efficiently separate soil, sand, gravel, stones, green waste, wood chips, compost, recycled materials, and glass.

The curved cylinder screen spins to sort through the material. As it rotates, wet materials tumble around, while air is added to make the soil and mulch lighter and drier working to achieve the highest quality product.

Different screen sizes will be used to produce various end product consistencies from finer soil to chunky bark.

The machine can process 50m3/hour of organics which is equivalent to around three full Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) collection truckloads.

Council launched its kerbside FOGO collections in August 2021, with the aim of diverting more than 1,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill annually.

The trommel screen is one part of Council’s investment in organics recycling.

The construction of a state-of-the-art organics processing facility is also underway reinforcing Council's commitment to sustainable waste management - by minimising landfill dependency, fostering a greener future and providing a high-quality product for the community.
