Successful Animal Care Services Day at Batlow Showground
Published on 26 February 2025
Snowy Valleys Council, in partnership with the Animal Welfare League (AWL), recently hosted a highly successful Animal Care Services Day at the Batlow Showground.
Held on the 11th of February the event provided free essential care for pets and reinforced the importance of responsible pet ownership within the community.
The event also provided a timely opportunity for Council’s Regulatory Staff to demonstrate the important role they play in keeping the community safe by returning stray animals to their owners.
In a four-hour window, 55 dogs and nine cats received professional care in a well-organised and cooperative setting.
Pet owners took full advantage of the services on offer, which included:
- 45 dogs vaccinated with C3
- 8 cats vaccinated with F3
- 24 pets microchipped
In the 6 months to January 2025, of the 35 dogs that Council impounded, just over half (57%) were able to be returned to their registered owner and an additional 43% were able to be rehomed through Council’s partner organisations.
Unfortunately, with low rates of microchipping in cats, the return-to-owner rates, including rehoming, are significantly lower.
The free microchipping initiative is expected to play a key role in reducing the number of lost or unclaimed pets in the region, ensuring more animals can be quickly reunited with their owners.
Encouraged by the success of this event, Council looks forward to continuing its partnership with AWL to deliver more initiatives that support pet welfare and responsible ownership.
By providing accessible pet care and education, these efforts help create a safer, healthier environment for both animals and their owners.
