Young Writers Invited to Shine in Library Writing Competition
Published on 27 May 2025
To celebrate Library and Information Week, Snowy Valleys Council’s Libraries are calling on all budding authors aged 6 to 12 across the region to unleash their creativity in the Library Writing Competition.
Young storytellers are invited to craft an original short story inspired by a surprise key phrase, which will be revealed on Monday, 2 June, at Council libraries and on the Library’s social media channels.
Acclaimed children’s author Katrina Roe, best known for her picture book Lily’s Balloon, will serve as the guest judge.
Ms Roe will be looking for:
- A strong, clear, and authentic voice
- A compelling and original story that engages readers
- Inclusion of the ‘key phrase’
Stories should be no longer than 500 words and will be judged in two age categories, 6-8 and 9-12 years.
There are fantastic prizes for the winning entries and runner-ups, and honourable mentions will receive a certificate to celebrate their efforts.
The competition opens on Monday, 2 June 2025, and closes on Friday, 18 July 2025.
Entry forms are available from Batlow, Tumbarumba and Tumut Libraries, at outreach services in Adelong and Talbingo, the mobile library at Jingellic, Khancoban and Tooma and online at www.svc.nsw.gov.au/events
The winners, runners-up and honorable mentions will be contacted and announced during Library and Information Week.
Library and Information Week is a time to celebrate the important role libraries play in supporting education and literacy across Australia. This year’s theme is To Read or Not to Read: Literacy Matters and takes place from 28 July to 3 August 2025
