FOGO - Business Mandates
New Food Waste Requirements for Businesses – Starting 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will begin introducing Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) requirements for businesses. Larger businesses that sell or handle food will need to separate food waste from general waste so it can be recycled into compost instead of going to landfill.
The new rules will first apply to larger businesses such as supermarkets, hospitals, institutions, clubs and hotels, before progressively including smaller businesses over time.
Benefits of separating food waste:
- Reduce waste disposal costs
- Improve waste management practices
- Lower your carbon footprint
- Support the reuse of organic materials
Council will work with local businesses to support a practical transition and provide information about how the requirements may apply to your organisation.
