de-amalgamation - Steering Committee

Community members from across the Snowy Valleys are being invited to play a direct role in shaping the future of local governance, with Expressions of Interest (EOIs) now open for positions on the De-amalgamation Steering Committee.

Council is seeking to appoint six community representatives to the Committee, with three representatives from the northern end and three representatives from the southern area of the Snowy Valleys.

The Steering Committee will provide valuable community input, local insight and oversight throughout the de-amalgamation process, helping to ensure the future councils reflect the priorities, values and aspirations of the communities they serve.

Successful applicants will work alongside the Elected Councillors and Council Executive staff (non-voting) in contributing to the important project.

Chief Transition Officer Nicole Jenkins said de-amalgamation represented a rare and important opportunity for the community.

“De-amalgamation is a once in a generation opportunity to shape how our communities will be governed into the future,” Ms Jenkins said.

“By getting involved, community members have the chance to actively help design a governance model that is effective, sustainable and truly responsive to local needs for many years to come.

“We are seeking people for the Steering Committee who can contribute constructively, consider the broader interests of the whole community and help ensure the process remains transparent, inclusive and focused on achieving the best outcomes for future residents.”

Council will also establish a De-amalgamation Community Panel to ensure more community voices are actively involved throughout the de-amalgamation process.

Ms Jenkins said expressions of interest for the Community Panel would open in mid-June.

“For the Panel we will be looking for a diverse range of perspectives to help ensure the process is representative of our community and provides meaningful opportunities for people to have their say,” she said.

Applications for the Steering Committee are now open and will close on 18 June.

Residents, business owners, community leaders and stakeholders from across the region are encouraged to apply.
