The Khancoban Wastewater Treatment Plant is set to be replaced with a modern facility ensuring the future safeguarding of public health for the local community.

Snowy Valleys Council will replace the town's aging treatment plant with a state-of-the-art facility, that will ensure the facility meets current best practice standards in terms of environmental protection.

Originally built in 1965 as part of the Snowy Hydro Scheme, Council took over management of the facility in 1993.

Now, having exceeded its design life, the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is ready for replacement. The new facility will ensure Council continues to deliver high-quality wastewater services to the community through improved system reliability, effluent quality, and environmental improvements for the local area.

The multi-million-dollar project will involve developing a concept and detailed designs, conducting an environmental assessment, and constructing a new modern WWTP to current health and safety standards.

Council has recently publicly tendered for specialist consultancy services to prepare concept and detailed designs for the new facility, with a report on the outcome of the tender scheduled for the December 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.

The Treatment Plant Upgrade project is fully funded from Council’s Wastewater Reserve.

Detailed designs are expected to be completed by June 2025 with construction works to follow.
