Local dog owners are urged to always keep their dogs on a leash when out walking.

Keeping pets on leash reduces unwanted and stressful dog interactions, limits aggression, minimises bites, keeps dogs safe and under control, and helps to protect wildlife.

Snowy Valleys Council Rangers Joshua Potts and Rodney Bartel are passionate about ensuring people’s pets are safe and owners obey the rules.

“With pet ownership comes responsibility, and the best thing you can do is keep your dog on a leash when you’re out and about,” Josh said.

“Leashing dogs in public spaces, ensures you’re always in control of your dog.”

Unaccompanied roaming dog complaints are also on the rise across the region and the Rangers are urging owners to be responsible.

“If you own a dog, it is your responsibility to ensure it is secure on your premises and not roaming around town,” says Rodney.

“We know unrestrained or unattended dogs are far more likely to be involved in risky situations and the last thing we want is to have animals impounded or worse still, be involved in an accident.”

The Rangers say the rules of dog ownership are pretty simple:

  • Microchip and register your dog
  • Always walk your dog on a lead
  • Clean up after your dog
  • Ensure that it has a safe, secure environment to live in

“Pets are such an important part of our lives, and we want to keep our towns safe for all to enjoy.”
