Tumut Aerodrome Draft Master Plan On Public Exhibition
Published on 20 February 2023
Aerodrome users and community members are invited to view the Draft Tumut Aerodrome Master Plan and provide feedback during the plan’s public exhibition period.
Snowy Valleys Council approved the draft plan for public exhibition at their February Ordinary Meeting last week.
The draft master plan, which includes the Stage 2 Aerodrome Improvements project, the NSW RFS Fire Control Centre, and the needs of the Forestry Corporation, updates the previous 2015 master plan and establishes a framework for future planning and development of the airport environment.
In developing the draft master plan independent aviation consultants reviewed feedback from stakeholders, including NSW RFS, considered options for improving business activity at the airport, and recognised the aerodrome’s importance as emergency infrastructure over a 20-year period.
Council has received substantial government funding to undertake upgrades at the aerodrome to help improve the capacity for fire-fighting operations and general use.
Stage 1 upgrades using $152,984 in funds from the Commonwealth Government's Regional Airports Program (round 1) were completed in June 2021 and included a 100-metre sealed taxiway and apron, improved drainage, and installation of 1,200 metres of animal-proof fencing.
Stage 2 upgrades, which are currently progressing through the planning stages include a runway extension, lighting, and other improvements to increase the capacity of the Aerodrome for fire-fighting operations as well as provide the option for Air Ambulance flights.
Funding of $12,500,000 for Stage 2 improvements was received from the NSW Government and the Commonwealth Government's Local Economic Recovery Fund. Stage 2 upgrades are due for completion by June 2024.
In August 2021 Council provided in-principal support for making suitable land available at the Tumut Aerodrome to accommodate an RFS Fire Control Centre. In December 2021 the NSW Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience, Steph Cooke announced $8m for a new Fire Control Centre for Tumut.
