Entry Level and Casual Employment Opportunities

Entry Level Positions

On an annual basis Council develops an entry level program for the upcoming year, determining what Traineeship, Apprenticeship or Cadetship opportunities will be offered.  Each year the program will differ depending on the current mix of ongoing entry level positions, financial, operational and strategic considerations.

Types of Entry Level Positions

  • Apprenticeship - A fixed term employment arrangement in which the apprentice is employed and paid by Council, working within a trade environment while also completing structured, off-the-job or workplace-based training organised through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Apprenticeships receive a nationally recognised trade qualification at the end of their apprenticeship term.  Apprenticeships are generally 3 or 4 years in duration (depending on the trade)
  • Traineeship - A fixed term employment arrangement in which the trainee is employed and paid by Council, working within the organisation while also completing structured, off-the-job or workplace-based training organised through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Trainees receive a nationally recognised VET level qualification at the end of the traineeship term.  Traineeships are generally 1 or 2 years in duration (depending on the qualification level)
  • Cadetship - A fixed term employment arrangement in which the cadet is employed and paid by Council, working within the organisation while also completing structured, off-the-job or workplace-based training organised through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Cadets receive a nationally recognised qualification at the end of the cadetship term. Generally, cadetships are aimed at supporting the attainment of university level qualifications in specific skills shortage areas.

Our annual entry level program schedule is:

  • February to March - Develop the new Entry Level Program
  • August to September  -  Advertise available positions
  • October to December  -  Interview and select for positions
  • January - Commencement of sucessful trainees, apprentices and cadets

There may be additional entry level positions advertised outside this program if funding opportunities or targeted programs arise or there are specific business needs. All available opportunities will be circulated to local high schools, advertised in local newspapers and on Council social media platforms. Applications for the program will be accessed via our online recruitment portal.
